Persea americana (avocado): bringing ancient flowers to fruit in the genomics era.André S. Chanderbali, Victor A. Albert, Vanessa E. T. M. Ashworth, Michael T. Clegg, Richard E. Litz, Douglas E. Soltis & Pamela S. Soltis - 2008 - Bioessays 30 (4):386-396.
The avocado (Persea americana) is a major crop commodity worldwide. Moreover, avocado, a paleopolyploid, is an evolutionary “outpost” among flowering plants, representing a basal lineage (the magnoliid clade) near the origin of the flowering plants themselves. Following centuries of selective breeding, avocado germplasm has been characterized at the level of microsatellite and RFLP markers. Nonetheless, little is known beyond these general diversity estimates, and much work remains to be done to develop avocado as a major subtropical‐zone crop. Among the goals (...)

Mining plant diversity: Gerbera as a model system for plant developmental and biosynthetic research.Teemu H. Teeri, Paula Elomaa, Mika Kotilainen & Victor A. Albert - 2006 - Bioessays 28 (7):756-767.
Gerbera hybrida is a member of the large sunflower family (Asteraceae). Typical of Asteraceae, Gerbera bears different types of flowers in its inflorescence. The showy marginal flowers comprise elongate, ligulate corollas that are female, whereas the central and inconspicuous disc flowers are complete, with both male and female organs. As such, Gerbera offers great potential for comparative developmental research within a single genotype. Moreover, different Gerbera varieties show an impressive spectrum of color patterns, directly displaying responses to developmental cues at (...)

Occupying Paulista: Housing activism, the new right and the politics of public space during the Brazilian crisis.Victor Albert - 2021 - Thesis Eleven 164 (1):37-53.
Brazilian society has frequently been described as polarized during the country’s recent political and economic crisis. In 2018, a wave of opposition to the centre-left Workers’ Party culminated in the election of Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing populist who portrays the political left as a malevolent force in Brazilian society. In this paper I explore this polarization through drawing on ethnographic research with the Homeless Workers’ Movement (Movimento de Trablhadores Sem-Teto, MTST), a large urban social movement that develops settlements on underutilized (...)

    Malaise dans la sociologie globale.Victor Roudometof & Nicole G. Albert - 2021 - Diogène n° 271-272 (3):31-51.

Sacramental Wisdom: Humilitatio, Eruditio, Exercitatio in the Scholastics and Today.O. P. Sr Albert Marie Surmanski - 2023 - Nova et Vetera 21 (4):1391-1413.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Sacramental Wisdom:Humilitatio, Eruditio, Exercitatio in the Scholastics and TodaySr. Albert Marie Surmanski O.P.IntroductionThe relationship between human nature and the sacraments is often characterized in a way that takes away from the beauty and power of the sacraments. Sacraments are sometimes viewed today as something basically irrelevant to human life, an interesting spiritual "option" for those who find comfort in ritual. This view leads to a sacramental practice that (...)

  10. Existentialismus und Altersreflexion. Zur Anthropologie Albert Camus’.Christoph Kann & Oliver Victor - 2017 - Allgemeine Zeitschrift für Philosophie 42 (2).
Together with the experience of time, finiteness and death, age is among the crucial, though neglected, topoi of existentialism. Its early representative Kierkegaard already emphasized the fundamental role of ageing as a basic condition of human existence which finds orientation in projections of the future. Similarly, Camus, who presupposes that human beings are afflicted with the experience of absurdity, incorporates the ambivalent phenomenon of ageing in his anthropological reflections. Latently following stoic ideas and with recourse to aesthetical considerations of nature, (...)

Enhancing national solidarity through the deployment of verbal categories: How the Albanian admirative participates in the construction of a reliable self and an unreliable other.Victor A. Friedman - 2012 - Pragmatics and Society 3 (2):189-225.
The deployment of the Albanian admirative as well as the evidential particles kinse ‘allegedly’ and gjoja ‘supposedly’ in Kosovar electronic news sources to render either dubitative or neutral reports — depending on both the source and the timing — contributed to the project of an independent Kosovo. The usages can be divided into three periods: 1994–1997, 1998–1999, and post-1999. During the first period, usage was exclusively dubitative and deployed for Serbian news sources. During the second period, which corresponded to the (...)

Diatoms are a species‐rich group of photosynthetic eukaryotes, with enormous ecological significance and great potential for biotechnology. During the last decade, diatoms have begun to be studied intensively using modern molecular techniques and the genomes of four diatoms have been wholly or partially sequenced. Although new insights into the biology and evolution of diatoms are accumulating rapidly due to the availability of reverse genetic tools, the full potential of these molecular biological approaches can only be fully realized if experimental control (...)

    Consciousness beyond the comparator.Victor A. Shames & Timothy L. Hubbard - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (4):697-697.
Gray's comparator model fails to provide an adequate explanation of consciousness for two reasons. First, it is based on a narrow definition of consciousness that excludes basic phenomenology and active functions of consciousness. Second, match/mismatch decisions can be made without producing an experience of consciousness. The model thus violates the sufficiency criterion.

The Problem of Priority in the Invention of Scientific Journals.Victor A. Kupriyanov - 2020 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 57 (4):185-198.
The article is devoted to the discussion on priority in the invention of scientific journal. In the first part of the article, the author makes a critical analysis of the arguments in the discussion, explicating some contradictions. In the second part, he develops his own approach claiming that the solution lies in the correct definition of the social demand which has impulsed the search for new tools of scientific communication. The author argues that, because of the universality of the socio-economic (...)

Attention sheds no light on the origin of phenomenal experience.Victor A. F. Lamme & Rogier Landman - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (5):993-993.
In O'Regan & Noë's (O&N's) account for the phenomenal experience of seeing, awareness is equated to what is within the current focus of attention. They find no place for a distinction between phenomenal and access awareness. In doing so, they essentially present a dualistic solution to the mind-brain problem, and ignore that we do have phenomenal experience of what is outside the focus of attention.

  44. Neural mechanisms of visual awareness: A linking proposition. [REVIEW]Victor A. F. Lamme - 2001 - Brain and Mind 1 (3):385-406.
Recent developments in psychology and neuroscience suggest away to link the mental phenomenon of visual awareness with specific neural processes. Here, it is argued that the feed-forward activation of cells in any area of the brain is not sufficient to generate awareness, but that recurrent processing, mediated by horizontal and feedback connections is necessary. In linking awareness with its neural mechanisms it is furthermore important to dissociate phenomenal awareness from visual attention or decision processes.
